Planting near a north-facing brick wall will provide helpful warmth during cooler months.

Drainage: Avoid low spots where water pools. Mangoes hate sitting in wet, soggy soil.

Preparing the Soil

Broad Improvement: Clear weeds in a 1-metre circle. Because Perth’s sandy soils drain fast and lack nutrients, mix compost broadly across the topsoil rather than heavily amending just the planting hole. Avoid creating a harsh soil contrast that traps roots.

Digging the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide as the nursery pot and the exact same depth as the root ball.

Planting Steps

Unpot Gently: Take the tree out of its container very carefully to protect the delicate central taproot from damage.

Position the Tree: Set the plant in the hole so the top of the root ball sits level with or slightly above the surrounding soil. Keep the graft union clearly above the dirt line to prevent collar rot.

Backfill: Fill the hole back in with your improved native soil and gently firm it down.

Water Deeply: Soak the root zone thoroughly right after planting to settle the soil around the roots.

Apply Mulch: Lay down coarse organic mulch to hold moisture but leave a 10 to 15 cm gap completely clear around the trunk to stop fungal issues.

Soil Improvers (The Main Additive)

Instead of just digging a hole and dumping compost in it, you want to blend a heavy-duty soil improver into your native sand across the wider planting area.

Richgro Black Marvel Premium Garden Compost

A fantastic choice for Perth sand. It is highly enriched, boosts microbial activity, and contains added iron and nutrients that fruit trees love.

Planting Hole Booster (Optional)

Scotts Osmocote Citrus & Fruit Premium Potting Mix

While you shouldn’t fill the whole ground hole with potting mix (as it creates a “pot effect” in the ground), you can safely blend a few handfuls of this premium fruit mix with your native sand right around the root ball. It contains a wetting agent and controlled-release fertiliser that feeds the young tree safely for up to 9 months.

How to Mix It

Dig a wide area (about 1 metre across).

Mix 50% native sand with 50% of your chosen Compost/Soil Improver.

Thoroughly blend them together before backfilling around your Bowen mango.

Download or print this guide

Original guide PDF — part 1

Original guide PDF — part 2

To successfully plant a Bowen (Kensington Pride) mango tree into the ground, choose a warm, full-sun spot protected from strong winds and plant it during spring.
