← All Plant Care guides

Here is your streamlined, ultra-budget guide to planting your Chamelaucium (Geraldton Waxflower) in Inglewood, WA, using just the two essential items you need.

The Only Products to Buy

  • Scotts Osmocote 500g Native Controlled Release Fertiliser (~$11.00 AUD)
  • A bag of chunky bark mulch (~$8.00 – $12.00 AUD)

(Total cost at Bunnings will be around $20 AUD)

Step-by-Step Planting Guide

1. Pick a Full Sun Spot: Find a place in your yard that gets 6 to 8 hours of direct, full sun every day. They love heat and will rot if planted in a damp, shady spot.

2. Dig the Hole: Dig a hole that is twice as wide as the pot your plant came in, but exactly the same depth. Keep the natural Inglewood sand you dig out right next to the hole—you will use it to fill the hole back up.

3. Add the Native Fertiliser: Sprinkle one tablespoon of your Scotts Osmocote Native Controlled Release Fertiliser directly into the bottom of the empty hole.

4. Plant It: Gently slide the Chamelaucium out of its plastic pot, being careful not to disturb its delicate root system. Place the root ball directly into the hole on top of the fertiliser.

5. Backfill with Local Sand: Fill the rest of the hole back up using the exact natural garden sand you just dug out. Press down gently with your hands around the base of the plant to secure it.

6. Water Thoroughly: Give the plant a deep, heavy drink with a watering can or hose right away to settle the sand around the roots.

7. Apply Bark Mulch: Spread a layer of chunky bark mulch 5–7 cm thick around the base of the plant to retain moisture. Crucial: Leave a 5 cm clear gap completely around the main woody stem

so it stays dry and doesn't develop collar rot.
