Olive Trees — Repotting Mix and Drainage

← All Plant Care guides

The Ideal Soil Recipe

Instead of standard potting mix, use one of these two options:

  • (Easiest): A premium Cacti & Succulent Potting Mix mixed with a high-quality Citrus & Fruit Potting Mix at a 50/50 ratio.

Essential Potting Requirements

  • Drainage Holes: Ensure your new pot has large drainage holes. Never let the pot sit directly in a saucer filled with water.
  • Avoid Moisture-Retaining Additives: Do not add water-saving crystals, heavy compost, or peat-based mixes that lock in moisture.
  • Fertiliser Caution: Skip heavy nitrogen fertilisers during repotting. Olive trees prefer a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–8.0) and thrive when their soil is kept lean. If you want to feed it, wait until active spring growth and use a controlled-release Mediterranean or Citrus fertiliser
