Use Scotts Osmocote Native Premium Potting Mix. Acacia cognata 'Limelight' is a phosphorus-sensitive Australian native plant that is highly prone to root rot if water sits in the container. This native-specific mix provides low phosphorus levels, added iron for lime-green foliage, and a free-draining structure crucial for potted wattles.
Why This Mix Works
Low Phosphorus: Protects native Acacia roots from nutrient toxicity.
Free Draining: Prevents moisture from lingering and causing fatal root rot.
Controlled Feed: Feeds the plant safely for up to 9 months.
Wetting Agent: Helps water soak evenly into the root zone instead of channeling down the sides of the pot.
Potting Tips
Choose a pot with wide, unobstructed drainage holes.
Do not put gravel or rocks at the bottom of the pot, as this can raise the perched water table and trap moisture.
Water the plant deeply right after potting to settle the mix around the roots.
Watering in Pots
Test the soil: Insert your index finger 5 cm deep into the mix.
Water only when dry: If the mix feels dry at that depth, water deeply.
Drench completely: Pour water until it runs out of the bottom holes.
Empty saucers instantly: Never let the pot sit in a puddle of water.
Reduce in winter: Cut watering frequency in half during colder months.
Pruning
Prune in spring: Wait until the fresh spring growth surge begins.
Tip prune early: Tip-pinch young branches to encourage a dense, bushy habit.
Trim lightly: Take off only the outer 10-15% of the foliage.
Avoid old wood: Do not cut back into bare branches without leaves.
Fertilising (After 9 Months)
Use native fertiliser: Apply Scotts Osmocote Plus Organics Native or a similar native-safe product.
Check the NPK: Ensure the phosphorus (P) rating is 1% or less.
Apply in spring: Top up the slow-release granules once a year when growth starts.
