Star Jasmine — Planting in the Ground with Compost and Manure

← All Plant Care guides

1. The Simple Soil Mix Ratio

Bayswater sand drains too quickly and lacks nutrients. Do not use the mulch inside the hole; mulch only goes on top. Mix your planting hole using this ratio:

50% Existing Bayswater Sand (provides the base and natural drainage)

  • 40% Compost (holds onto moisture and improves soil structure)
  • 10% Cow Manure (provides a gentle, rich nutrient boost)

2. Simple Planting Instructions

  • Step 1: Dig the hole. Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot your jasmine came in, but the exact same depth.
  • Step 2: Blend the soil. Shovel your compost and cow manure directly into the hole with the loose sand you just dug out. Mix it all together well with your spade.
  • Step 3: Prep the plant. Gently remove the jasmine from its plastic pot. Lightly tickle or tease the roots at the bottom if they are tightly bound.
  • Step 4: Plant it. Place the plant in the hole. Make sure the top of the plant's root ball sits level with (or just slightly below) the surrounding ground. Fill the rest of the hole with your soil mix and press down gently.
  • Step 5: Water deeply. Give the plant a massive soak right away to settle the sand and soil around the roots.
  • Step 6: Mulch the top. Spread a 5–7cm layer of your mulch over the soil around the plant. Important: Keep the mulch a few centimetres away from the main green stem of the jasmine to prevent the wood from rotting.

Quick Care Tips for Bayswater

  • Watering: In Perth’s hot weather, water your new jasmine 2 to 3 times a week for the first summer until its roots grow deep. Once established, it becomes highly drought tolerant.
  • Sunlight: Ensure it gets a spot with full sun to partial shade. The more sun it gets, the more fragrant white flowers it will produce.
